Bride Blogger Amanda: To-Do Lists and Schedules

>> Tuesday, August 3, 2010

I’m a pretty organized person and don’t generally fly by the seat of my pants too often, especially when it comes to big events. I have the next week off, and while it’s a vacation from work, it certainly won’t be a vacation from wedding planning. I’m going to take the opportunity to make up an extensive schedule of the day’s activities so I have a better idea in my mind of how things will run from hair and make-up to pictures to ceremony to more pictures to reception and on through the evening. This way, I’ll be able to better anticipate all the little details during the day before and day of the wedding – for example, who’s picking up the bridesmaids that don’t have cars from the hotel? What time should the cake be cut? Who’s in charge of flowers? How long do we have for pictures before and after the ceremony? Who do we need to be ready for pictures before and after the ceremony? When can the musicians get together to rehearse?
And that’s not the half of it.

Not all people need or even want the play-by-play of the day, but for me, I know it will give me far less anxiety to have most of it planned out in my head and visually on some sort of schedule so I can see how all things coincide – for instance, while I’m getting my hair done, somebody else is going to be decorating tables, and while the wedding party is together taking pictures after the ceremony, the reception will be starting, etc. I’d like to have a tentative schedule down far enough in advance that I can anticipate potential issues and let everyone who’s helping us out know where they need to be and when.

My fiancé and I also need to talk about which songs we would like played (or those we prefer not to be played) at our reception and get that information prepared for the DJ. We also need to come up with a tentative program for the ceremony; we have our songs and readings picked out already – we just need to put it all together!

With several years of event planning experience under my belt, I’m smart enough to know that not everything is going to go as planned. And that doesn’t mean we won’t have a wedding that turned out better than we could have ever imagined. It just means we need to do everything we can to make sure things go well so we can relax and have fun the day of and let go of the things we can’t control.

And really, even if, for some inexplicable and highly unanticipated reason, the day turns out to be a bit of a disaster, it doesn’t matter because I’m marrying the man of my dreams! It’s not just about the day; it’s about the marriage.

Happy planning!
-Amanda

This was a successful yet stressful weekend. I attempted to take on one too many appointments while being back in Nebraska. Although I was able to check off quite a few appointments, questions, and meetings, I was also bombarded with more information than I was prepared for - which I am sure that many of you can relate to! Now I am unwinding and sifting through all the information in hopes of making the best decisions.

Two highlights from this weekend were the cake tasting and looking into letterpress invitation. We decided to go with the Butterfly Bakery as our cake choice. The cakes not only look phenomenal but also tasted fantastic! Linda, the owner of Butterfly Bakery, was very laid back, accommodating, and very easy to work with.  Check out some of her cakes-here's a photo of one of her cakes.

As for letterpress, what is letterpress? Evan, my fiancé, is a graphic designer and this was his one and only request! Letterpress is a style of old fashioned printing that leaves an impression in the paper (in Bailey terms). This unique style is a great way to add something fun and different to your traditional invitation that is sure to grab your guest's eye. Christopher owns Porridge Papers in Lincoln and does all kinds of national business. They also make their own paper along with the letterpress. Christopher was very friendly and even gave us a tour. Definitely worth checking out and we will totally be doing our printing with him! Here are a couple examples of his invitations.

That’s all for now. Good luck with wedding plans and don’t forget to de-stress!

Nebraska WeddingDay is excited to announce our guest blogger: Bailey McPherrin, who is planning her wedding for next spring. Follow her every Tuesday to hear all about her experiences as she plans her wedding!

Hi, everyone! I am a bride and my name is Bailey. I'm writing from Fort Collins, Colorado. I'm getting married in Nebraska City at the Lied Lodge on May 28, 2010 and I couldn't be planning a long distance wedding without Nebraska WeddingDay magazine. As I'm sure you've noticed, it has everything you could possibly need for planning a wedding! My engagement was in Nebraska on August 29, 2009. I began wedding plans immediately, knowing I would only be in town for two days. I mapped out my plan for which reception halls I wanted to see and began looking!

I knew I wanted the wedding and reception outside so I looked into the Lied Lodge. We checked it out and loved it. They are able to do both the wedding and reception outside, and they also give you the option of using one of their old apple barns. We knew we wanted the style to be natural/garden/vintage and the barns just fit so perfectly! So, we signed the contract and made it official! Now on to more details. We will be back in Nebraska this weekend to get more wedding plans nailed down. But until then check out these pictures of the wedding and reception site!

Adding All-American spirit to your wedding

>> Monday, June 29, 2009

In honor of the upcoming 4th of July weekend, here are some suggestions for ways to celebrate your wedding and honor your country at the same time:

Sparklers: Instead of bubbles or rice, have your guests light sparklers as you and your hubby leave the ceremony. Just ensure that everyone uses the utmost care so no one gets hurt!

Fireworks: Fireworks are along the same line as sparklers, but this is definitely a bigger and flashier way to make an impact on your guests. It's a great idea for an outdoor reception.

4th of July menu: Grilling out or barbecue is about as American as it gets on the 4th of July, so consider a low-key outdoor reception with burgers, barbecue, potato salad, chips, beer and lemonade. You can serve apple pie instead of cake for dessert, too.

There are a ton of ways to "American-ize" your wedding, and it's up to you how far you want to take it. But if you're planning a wedding on or near the 4th of July, adding some American touches could be a big hit with your guests.

Future Anniversary Cards

>> Monday, June 22, 2009

Peter Merry, a well-known wedding and reception planner, offers up this fun idea for an activity at your reception:

"Place an anniversary card, each with a different year of marriage assigned on the envelope, along with a pen on each guest table. Include printed instructions (so the MC won't spoil the surprise by announcing it) that will ask the guests at each table to sign the card, and write a note that they would like you to read on that particular anniversary.

Once the cards are completed and sealed, they will be collected and put with the regular gift cards, so the bride and groom can discover them later. On many of their anniversaries, the bride and groom will be able to open yet another anniversary card that will bring back fond memories of their wedding day."

Slimming Down for your Wedding Gown

>> Monday, June 15, 2009

As your wedding approaches, you're probably starting to panic about how you're going to squeeze into that gorgeous wedding dress that you ordered one size too small (back when you were thinking you would lose the weight before the big day came).

Luckily, there are options that can help you lose weight for your wedding. Some require a little planning ahead, while others may work if you're trying to drop the pounds in the last couple of months.

One option that has become increasingly popular is going the surgical road. The benefits of surgery are that the results are permanent, so while it may be pricier than diet and exercise, it could end up saving you a lot of time and money in the future. (Bonus: some insurance plans may cover a portion of the procedure!) However, you will have to plan ahead to make sure you have plenty of time to recover from a surgical procedure, so don't put this off until the last minute.

Another trend for brides is body boot camp. These camps are often designed to get maximum results in around 6 weeks, so they're great for the procrastinating bride, and they are often affordable since you're paying for a short amount of time and sharing a trainer with other women. You will want to be prepared to work your butt off, and you might have to sacrifice sleeping in some mornings as well. You should also keep in mind that unless you are truly committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the results may not last long beyond your wedding.

Check out the NWD website to find some great businesses that can assist you in your wedding weight-loss goals!

Wedding Cake Alternatives

>> Monday, June 8, 2009

If the traditional wedding cake isn't your style, fear not - there are plenty of fun ideas for desserts to serve your guests.

Miniature pies: Have your baker whip up different flavors of mini pies. Make sure to include an option on your RSVP card (alongside the typical "chicken or fish" checkbox) for guests to select their favorite flavors.

Cupcakes: Who doesn't love a cupcake? If you have a monogram or other design theme in your wedding, this is a great way to feature it.

Table cakes: Instead of one big wedding cake, consider having a smaller cake made for each table. Bonus: It can serve as a unique centerpiece as well!

Bite-size (mini) cakes: More and more couples are choosing this option. You can have your baker stack them artfully for a striking arrangement.

Polaroid Guest Book

>> Monday, June 1, 2009

Instead of a traditional guest book at which you will rarely look back, consider using a Polaroid camera and having your guest book attendance take photos of all your guests as they enter the wedding.

Guests can write their personal well wishes to you along the bottom of their photo, or glue their photo to a page and write notes along the page. Later, you can look back at all who were present. An added bonus: 30 years from now, you can laugh at everyone else's dated fashion sense, not just your own!

Pamper Yourself

>> Tuesday, May 26, 2009

If planning your wedding is starting to feel more like a chore than the giddy experience that it should be, maybe it’s time to look for ways to reduce the stress. Here are a few ideas:

Take a day off. Take some time to pamper yourself. Turn off your phone, grab your maid of honor, and go to a spa. On a budget? Take a bubble bath at home and give yourself a pedicure.

Don’t be afraid to delegate. Pass duties on to family and friends—they should be more than happy to help! Asking for a favor every now and then does not make you a bridezilla. Your mother would probably be more than willing to help you address invitations, and asking your bridesmaids to help decorate the church could make the experience much more enjoyable. Your fiancé can handle some of the details as well…have him plan the honeymoon or book the DJ for your reception. You may have to give up some control, but in the end, you’ll be glad you did.

Focus on the big picture. Of course your wedding day is important, but the most important thing is the man and the marriage. Schedule an ultra-romantic date with your hubby-to-be to remind yourself why you’re going through this whole crazy process in the first place!

The key is to take some time out to recharge your batteries. Planning a wedding is hard work—you need a little break every now and then!

Choosing your Bridesmaids

>> Monday, April 27, 2009

And you thought finding the groom was hard! Sometimes picking your bridesmaids (and handling the drama that can come with it) can be exhausting. Here are some tips to help you along the way:

Remember that it's your day. Having 10 bridesmaids might be pushing it, but if you have lots of close friends and you can't bear the thought of leaving any of them out, include them all. You don't want to regret missing anyone on your big day.

Use the 10-year test. Think hard about who you will still be in touch with in 10 years. Chances are, using this test will be an eye-opener if you're struggling to narrow your list.

Consider their own personal lives. Is one of your friends going through a really difficult time financially or emotionally? Often, women are so honored to be asked to stand up at a wedding, they will say yes even if they really aren't capable of handling the responsibility at that point in time. If you have a friend like this, it may be most considerate to ask her to do a reading at the ceremony or something else that doesn't require the time and money commitment of being a bridesmaid.

Be honest. You may face the difficult task of leaving out a friend you just don't feel close to anymore. In this case, ignoring it or not acknowledging that she may feel slighted is probably not a good idea. Take her out for coffee and explain the situation to her. As awkward as it may be, it shows her that at least you care enough about your friendship to take the time to talk to her about it. It may be uncomfortable, but if she reacts badly, it will probably only confirm that she wasn't the right person to stand up in your wedding anyway.

Stand out on your big day!

>> Monday, April 20, 2009

More and more couples are avoiding the "stand and shuffle" routine for their first dance by taking ballroom dancing lessons. There is a lot to like about this trend: You can avoid any clumsy moments during your first dance as husband and wife; you can bond with your hubby-to-be during dancing lessons; you can take a break from the pressures of wedding planning with your newfound hobby...the list goes on and on.

Here are a few things to consider if you want to go the "choreographed dance" route:

*Select a dance studio for training. Size and location have nothing to do with whether or not you will mesh with the instructor. Make sure you meet your particular instructor and find out if your personalities and dance styles will complement each other. Remember, this is supposed to be enjoyable! If you find yourself dreading your lessons, you've missed out on half the fun of the experience.

*Pick a song. There are many different ways to choose a first dance song--it may hold special memories for you as a couple; you may have dreamed of dancing to a particular song from the age of five; or you may just hear something on the radio that you like. Just make sure you pick the song at the beginning of dance lessons so your instructor has plenty of time to choreograph and teach you the steps for your first dance.

*Be clear about what you want. Do you want a romantic, sensual dance? Would you prefer something complicated and flashy? Or do you just want to make people laugh? Whatever style you prefer, make sure you let your instructor know so they can choreograph appropriately.

*Practice, Practice, Practice! You shouldn't practice only while with your instructor. Set aside special times with your fiance to work on the steps. You will feel a lot more comfortable on the big day if you've made sure you're well prepared.

Following these steps will help ensure that you have a stand-out moment for your first dance, and help cement your bond with your future hubby in the process!

Who needs color?

>> Monday, April 6, 2009

When it comes to wedding colors, sometimes less is more--white is fast becoming a popular choice among brides. And why not? Being surrounded by white gives one the feeling of being in a heavenly, serene atmosphere...what better theme to have at a wedding? Naturally, most brides don't want their bridesmaids wearing white dresses, but consider white as one of your "colors" and you won't be disappointed.

Although you might be afraid a white bridal bouquet will blend in with your dress, it can actually help you stand out. Fill your ceremony and reception with gorgeous white orchids, lilies, gardenias, or roses for a breathtaking effect. Have your cake accented with cream or white flowers to catch your guests' eyes. Drape all the windows with sheer white curtains. If you're feeling really bold, dress your groom and his groomsmen in white tuxes.

We love this idea for any season, but think of how beautiful it could be for an outdoor event, or a snow-covered Christmas wedding...

Save-the-Date Tips

>> Monday, March 23, 2009

Congratulations! You've picked a day to get hitched. Now it's time to tell your family and friends - and all other potential guests - the good news. Save-the-Date cards are a great way to spread the word about your wedding. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when sending your Save-the-Dates:

Keep it brief. It's tempting to crowd your Save-the-Dates with lots of info, but hold back a bit. Keep the motto "less is more." Remember, Save-the-Dates are supposed to be teasers for your invitation.

Make an impact. Use Save-the-Dates to show your style and personality. Save-the-Dates do not need to be overly formal, so take the opportunity to be cute and creative. You can send postcards, note cards, pamphlets, magnets, or even pens with your wedding day info on the barrel of the pen. This is the first impression your guests will receive regarding your wedding, so wow them as best you can!

Don't overdo it. You're excited about your wedding, but be cautious before you start mailing Save-the-Dates to everyone you know. They'll all be expecting an invitation to the wedding, and you don't want to accidentally exceed your guest list limit.

Trends for Flowers in 2009

>> Monday, March 9, 2009

Trying to decide on the perfect floral scheme for your wedding? There are several fun trends for 2009. There are also certain flowers that never go out of style. According to Kyle Robino of Old Market Habitat in Omaha, roses are always timeless, but there are interesting ways to add a modern twist to their classic elegance. "The hybrid roses today are just amazing colors. Hocus Pocus, which has a dark burgundy rose with a lime yellow zebra stripe running through it, and Nightflash, which has a red and white zebra stripe, are two examples."

Two hot trends in 2009 are hydrangeas and Gerbera daisies. "Gerbera daisies are big right now, as they are kind of a retro-mod seventies flower and come in many colors. They're a whimsical, happy flower, and you only need a few to make a statement," Robino says. Colored calla lilies and pixie calla lilies are also popular, with favorite colors being dark eggplant purple, flame yellow, and rusty orange.

According to Stacy Combs of Lincoln's Petal Creations, hot pink and orange flowers are out and all ivory is in, as are other monochromatic color palettes. She says combos like tiffany blue with chocolate and ivory with lime green are also popular right now, as are several graduated shades of one color, "like the paint strip samples in the paint store." She adds that red is always classic and in style.

Combs also notes that the "roundy moundy" style of bridal bouquet is out, and trailing bouquets are in. "This is not your mother's cascading bouquet of a shield of roses, however," she says. "It's more asymmetrical and off to one side, and has greens you wouldn't normally see, like grasses, hala leaves, or aspidistra leaves."

For contact information on the best florists in the Nebraska region, including those mentioned here, visit NEweddingday.com. You can also pick up the latest issue of Nebraska WeddingDay Magazine for more information on floral tips and trends.
