Fat Girl Confessional

>> Sunday, April 25, 2010

Well, ladies, I may not be a bride anymore, but as far as wanting to lose some extra pounds, I'm right there with many of you brides trying to slim down for your wedding gown. In fact, NWD is a sponsor for Lincoln's first city-wide weight loss challenge, Wealth for My Health, (coordinated by the amazing Sara Brown of Events Refined) and I decided it was time to get off my butt and get healthy.

So I joined. And I immediately regretted it. What was I thinking? I have my NWD job, two adorable (insane) kids (three if you count my husband), and a host of other activities I'm involved in. Not only will I have to find time - and motivation - to work out, but I'll also have to find the time to cook healthy meals instead of throwing a pizza in the oven. Fabulous.

So I went to my first boot camp session on Monday (with the inspiring but relentless Heather Hall at Body Overhall), and let me tell you, there's a reason they call it boot camp. It's definitely resembles army training, at least in my imagination. You know the drill - I worked out muscles I didn't know I had; I considered other acts of torture that would be more pleasurable than this; I prayed for the good Lord's strength to get me through the next 45 seconds, etc. But a funny thing happened when I was done: I felt GREAT - exhilarated, happy, proud of myself. Two days later, I still can't walk down stairs or sit in a chair without my quads screaming in protest, but for the first time I feel like the pain is worth it.

I've always known it to be necessary, but have never managed to find the motivation to stick with an exercise/healthy eating routine. However, now that I have kids and my metabolism isn't that of an 18-year-old anymore, I know it's time to get this health thing figured out before I end up 150 pounds overweight with a much steeper hill to climb.

So on that note, ladies, I'll be chronicling my weight-loss experiences here every now and then, offering some (hopefully) positive motivation to all of you brides hoping to drop a couple of sizes. We're all in the same boat here. With that said, here's my goal: 25 pounds or 5 inches off my waist - whichever comes first. I'll keep you posted on my progress. And I would appreciate any well-wishes you'd like to send my way!
-Holly
P.S. Those of you hoping for a Biggest Loser-style "before" photo are out of luck - we did take one, but that image is between me and my trainer only, thank you very much!

It's nice to be loved! Click here to view the sweet thank-you from one of our Friday Giveaway winners.

Jen's video got me thinking...if you're really trying to do something cool for your wedding thank-yous, what about video thank-you notes? Of course, we've already seen the trend of "wedding trailers" included in DVD save-the-dates and invitations, but what about thank-yous? Instead of a preview of your upcoming wedding in your invitations, a "highlight reel" video thank-you could be a fun keepsake for guests. Or carry the cinematic theme all the way through and do both! Check out this video from A Sound Impression - wouldn't this be perfect for a thank-you video to guests?

Bride Blogger Kayley: Bridesmaid Love!

>> Thursday, April 15, 2010

The wedding stress is getting to me; I am now down to the weight I was when I had my tonsils out! It doesn't help that my Type A personality has no idea what the meaning of the word 'relax' means. Thank goodness I have my girlfriends to keep me smiling.

When it came to choosing bridesmaids, I already knew who to call. My core group of girls were ready for the challenge! Karen, my Maid of Honor, has been my best friend since 8th grade. Our last names led to us being seated next to each other in English class and from that moment one it's been nothing but laughter ever since. Kara, Kristin, and Sam are my bridesmaids and each hold a special place in my heart. Kara was my partner in crime when we studied abroad together in Mexico and became my roommate for the remainder of our college years. Kristin, whom I met through Kara, has been there through some of my wilder adventures (and will never share them with Mark) and is one of the funniest people I know. Sam is my Twin (we looked so similar throughout high school) and my soccer buddy. She has a heart of gold and has always been there to offer a kind word or share clothes with me.

I cannot wait to see all my girls next month! They have decided to throw me a bachelorette party with a Sex & The City theme! I am so excited not only to dress up (I am a total Carrie!), drink oh-so-posh Cosmos, but to also enjoy one good night of girly revelry before I become a married woman.

Having a support system of strong women you can depend on is something that can never be replaced by a future husband. My girls get me in a way only they can. I love them for the women they've become and the friends they've always been. So take a moment and tell your bridesmaids how special they are to you. They deserve it.
-Kayley

Bride Blogger Bailey: Invitations

>> Tuesday, April 13, 2010

After many many hours, lots of going back and forth, a few arguments, and tons of changes, the wedding invitations are done. And they are PERFECT! Evan, my fiance, is a graphic designer, which meant that he wanted to create our invitations. The only challenge is that we have different styles and taste.

I honestly can say that invitations have been the hardest part of all the wedding planning. But it was so worth it. We were able to come up with something totally original, different, completely us and amazingly, something that we both agreed on! :) I love my invites, take a look!
A special thanks to Porridge Papers for letter pressing the invites!

Sweet Treats

>> Sunday, April 11, 2010

Check out these sweet favors for a twist on the popular cookies or cupcakes. Yum!

This bride covered jars of maple syrup with nature-themed fabric and tied it with twine.
This bride placed jars of honey at her guests' table settings.
This couple filled jars with chocolate peanut butter cookie dough...that was probably a huge hit!
This bride's mother candied all of these Granny Smith apples by hand, using pretzels, peanut butter cups, Butterfingers, and cookies. I hope she at least got a hug.
