New Bride Blogger: Kayley Obermeier

>> Thursday, January 28, 2010

Howdy from Texas! My name is Kayley and I am one busy bride in Houston. I am a proud Army brat but graduated both high school and college in Nebraska (Go Big Red!) and will be getting married in Omaha on May 22nd of this year. That’s right, THIS year! Not only am I planning a long distance wedding but I am also trying to throw together my dream celebration in a matter of five months. After attending the bridal show at the Mid America Center, my wonderful mother sent me Nebraska WeddingDay Magazine to help me along with the planning process. What a life saver it has been!

My fiancé, Mark, proposed to me as we were moving into our downtown Houston loft on December 30, 2009. Not only did he find the perfect ring, he totally surprised me as I did not expect to find a little blue box inside the bowl of my new Kitchen Aid mixer. After the flurry of phone calls and emails to loved ones, we both knew we had to get to work planning our wedding as soon as possible as I am an officer in the Army Reserve and leave on orders in July. With this short amount of time, we needed a wedding date, and we needed to set it fast!

Mark and I both knew we wanted to get married in my hometown of Omaha, as both of our families are from that area. I immediately began calling Catholic parishes, emailing priests, doing whatever I could on my lunch breaks to find a free weekend in May or June. This turned out to be more difficult than it sounds due to both Mark and I being parishioners at the Cathedral here in Houston. Because of this, most parishes I spoke with either turned down my request or wanted an extraordinary amount of money in return. After some frantic pleading, the wonderful Father Dan at St. Vincent de Paul offered his services to marry Mark and me in his parish. We were overjoyed with the good news! Now it’s on to tackling the reception site, photographer, baker, florist, etc. I hope my blog with all of its ups and downs will help other brides who are planning a wedding in a limited amount of time. It’s a challenge but as my fiancĂ© always tells me when I find myself stressed, “Be Army strong!”
